LITTLE PANOCHE DAM FIELD TRIP February 27
by Ernie DeFever
Bill McFalda and I met up with Ken and Karen Jones, Donna and Mark Schreiter and George Schneider at the Salinas KMart parking lot. We hit the road at7:15, arriving at the collecting site at 8:51. Travel time - 188 miles round trip and 1 hour 36 minutes one way. The Beck family, Teri, John and James, were already there waiting for the wagon master to arrive. Ed and Eileen Ferner arrived, which made a total of 13 Club members. Great showing. There were also members from the Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Fresno clubs.
Leader for the day, Kris Rowe, a member of the Central Coast Rockhound Yahoo Group arrived around 9:30 but by this time some 30 or so of us had worked our way into the dry creek below the Little Panoche Dam. Not much to my liking in the creek, mostly brick red to red brown jasper with quartz and some yellow in heavy quartz. Franciscan jaspers?
I spotted three piles of rock up the hill that a farmer or rancher had removed from a field and John and I headed in that direction. Bingo! Good rocks! Gary,Bill and I spent about an hour picking thru and then returned to the parkiing area.
After some eats the Jones’ headed for home. Ed, Bill and I went back into the creek and eplored up the creek to the top of the bluffs with very little to be had.
On the way home we stoppped at I-5 and Rt. 165 to check out an old plume agate location written up in a book. No luck - all locked up. All in all we had a good time and came home with a bag of rocks.
