February 2010 NEWSLETTER
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Gary Beck
Boy am I excited! Let me explain; at our January club meeting I asked for goals for this year. The need for more activities was a common response and a better meeting rock raffle, so we will try and fulfill those goals. Ed Ferner who is out of town, emailed me with the idea of getting a permanent shop and meeting place as a long term goal. On that thought I’m happy to announce the club just purchased some shop equipment. We bought a 12 inch slab saw, a Diamond Pacific Genie, 6 inch water trim saw and a flat lap machine and these will be available to check out with proper training.
Another bit of good news is that the club received a generous donation of some semi-prescious gemstones. I would like to give a big thanks to Ed and Eileen Ferner for hosting the workshhop on chain making and wire wrapping. Those that attended said it was great. Hope they can do it again.
Also, thanks to Bob Braun for volunteering to be Federation Director.
SHOW WORKSHOP - February 21st, 1 pm Beck’s Ranch, 29325 Chualar Canyon Road, Chualar. Please attend and help make the March 13 & 14, 2010 show a success. Phone 679-2896

The CD matured and is in checking account. Show needs to track all adults to fall within the 500 limits.
FEDERATION: no report,
FIELD TRIP: possible trip to California Science Museum. Karin will investigate. Train or van rental possible. March 6th bus trip to the Castro Valley club show in Newark sponsored by the Carmel Valley Club. We are all invited to participate. Leaves K-Mart parking lot at 8 am.
Gary read off the COOP trips slated for 2010. There is an Ant Hill trip set on February 27th in Bakersfield. Notice sent to members via e-mail.
WORKSHOP: January 30th 1 pm, Beck’s Ranch - A fun time is the focus, we can slab, cab and also paint rocks for the show wheel.
OLD BUSINESS: Betty wants a tumble bag count. Gary will do. Co-chair Ken said all is OK so far with shows progress. Karen Jones has been e-mailing other clubs, contacting the Herald, Coast Weekly, Californian and looking for free advertising. Posters and flyers were out for members to distribute. We have a $95 credit with the Californian.
WORKSHOP: Preshow is set for 2/21, Sunday before the meeting, Beck’s Ranch 1 pm. Charles requested rocks needed for the wheel to be brought to the w/s so he can clean them or bring to the show. We also need rocks for the Silent Auction.
RAFFLE: Jeff passed out packets of 10 books of tickets and guidelines. He wants all moneys to be turned in to him and not at the front desk. This avoids confusion during show times.
ALAA: The group is dispersing vital information to all rock clubs and members via the CFMS site and e-mails to Yahoo groups. WE ARE GOING TO LOSE SOME WONDERFUL ROCK COLLECTING AREAS. Go to the CFMS web site
NEW BUSINESS; Gary talked about goals for the coming year and asked members for their input. 1) more activities 2) silversmithing workshop 3) enter our handcrafted items to the Monterey County Fair in August and possible Santa Cruz in October. We can enter the items we’ve made for the club case “local stones”. 4) more equipment, supplement what we have, a large saw 5) Santa Cruz show case display. Karin has applications for April show 6) Board Members met with Yoko Bassett on January 23 to view Jim’s lapidary equipment. Gary went over the list of Equipment that Yoko would like to sell to the club: Genie, 12” slab saw, flat lap and 6” water saw. We will offer Yoko $1500 for those items. M/A/P by Jeannie and Bill. Gary will talk with Yoko.
PROGRAM: Jeff talked about ReactoRelief heat packs. Reactreliefcali@aol.com (831)297-0007. Seems like a good item
CLEAR CREEK MEETINGS: Gary attended two meetings and reported good attendance. No verbal comments were allowed, only written and turned in before hand. Findings of slight chance for children to contact the asbestos fibers, although the fiber findings are the straight variety not the hooked. No EPA reps were present. EPA has lumped all the asbestos fibers together without separating types. BLM has designated a system of use starting with A (open) to G (closed) and recommends E, which would be motor vehicle touring and no off road activity. The green sticker fees are being lost with the closure. Gary felt there were no straight answers from BLM. The consensus of opinion is that all would like the area open and users would be responsible for their own health. Gary read his written response and is submitting qualified research papers. Many members have signed the form. Will make copies for the minutes. May 2, 2010 a peaceful protest is set for the entrance to CCMA. Let’s all attend.
CLAIMS SEMINAR: April 24th near Modesto Gary will attend, asked if others would be interested in attending. Important meeting as we are losing collecting sits.
4TH OF JULY: Karin will work on getting a committee together.
MONTHLY ROCK RAFFLE: upgrade items
Gary reiterated what the Club does during the year to draw interest to the rock hounding hobby. Where we’ve come in the past years - purchasing a trailer, equipment and furthering education.

If you can save your canceled postage stamps and turn them in to our
Federation Director, he can in turn hand them over to the CFMS representative. They are donated to the Easter Seal program, and from there they are sold to collectors. This is a great way to donate to a very worthy cause.
